Property Location

The cottage is situated just outside the small village of Courson, which lies about 2km North of St. Sever, midway between the market towns of Vire and Villedieu les Poeles There is a small store in Courson which sell basic provisions, and in St. Sever there is a wide variety of shops (bakeries, butchers, grocers, bank etc) plus a great weekly market. Vire and Villedieu les Poeles have the full range of supermarkets, restaurants etc. SW Calvados is famous for its rolling countryside, full of apple orchards and small dairy farms. The area is very peaceful and enjoys a relaxed pace of life, making it a great holiday location.

Description of Property

The cottage is peaceful and surrounded by a large south facing garden. There is private parking for several cars. The garden itself has a barbeque which gets the sun well into the evening, and there are plenty of tables, chairs and benches for relaxing at. The front door to the cottage opens into a small reception area, which leads straight into the kitchen/dining area. This is a great part of the house for relaxing/entertaining as the kitchen is only separated from the dining area by a waist high wall, meaning whoever is cooking can join in with whats going on in the other room. The kitchen is well equipped with fridge/freezer, electric oven and washing machine, plus a full range of utensils, and the dining room has a traditional farmhouse feel to it and is complete with open fireplace, large table (seats 6 comfortably, plus high chair), radio and a mini lounge area. Turning left from the reception area, several steps lead up to the main lounge which is the oldest part of the cottage. There is a traditional Norman fireplace here, plus lovely beamed ceilings and a wooden floor. There is plenty of comfortable seating, plus a TV/Video (with UK TV), books and some games should you want to use them. There are French Doors leading out to the front of the house, giving access to the garden via the stone steps. The back of the cottage is reached through the kitchen, and here are the two twin bedrooms, bathroom and toilet. The bedrooms are light and airy and have lovely views onto the garden. The bathroom is complete with bath and overhead shower attachment and the toilet is separate to the bathroom. There is a cot in one of the bedrooms. The main double bedroom is the only upstairs room in the cottage, with the stairs leading from the reception area. It is a peaceful room, with good views from the bay window over the surrounding countryside. There is a sink in this room. The entire cottage has central heating, although this will not be required in the summer months as the cool of the cottage makes a welcome break from the warmth out in the garden. We have recently modernised the cottage, but have made sure to retain the traditional charm, and we feel the cottage has a relaxing, homely feel to it. There is an English speaking caretaker nearby who is available should there be any problems during your stay.

Places of Interest

There are plenty of things to do in the surrounding area. Nearby there are lovely walks in the Forest of St. Sever, plus golf and watersports at Lake Dathee (10 mins drive). The historic towns of Vire and Villedieu les Poeles are both worth visiting (15 mins drive). A little further afield are the beaches along the Manche coast, plus Le Mont St Michel which is well worth visiting (between 45mins - 1 hour away). To the North are the D-Day landing beaches and historic Bayeux with its tapestry. There are lots of other interesting and historical towns throughout the region, plus plenty of musems, shops and other activities - we have a good range of leaflets/brochures in the cottage. The area itself is great to just explore, with the lovely country views to enjoy and the numerous little towns and villages to stop at, plus the farms/smallholdings which regularly offer local produce to try out.
